Gay Community Endowment Fund

Established in 2001, The Gay Community Endowment Fund is a permanent philanthropic fund of Akron Community Foundation and to date (through the 2013-14 grant cycle) has granted over $360,000 to organizations and agencies in the greater Akron area that support programs or services that support or positively impact GLBT people and serve as a catalyst for full participation of GLBT people in our society. The Fund promotes philanthropy within the GLBT and allied communities and since 2001 has built a fund balance of close to one million dollars through gifts, fundraising, and bequests. The earned income from this balance is distributed through annual grant making. The fund accepts grant applications for programs and services that positively impact the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, as well as greater Akron as a whole. It also raises awareness about equality issues and rallies the LGBT community around a common philanthropic purpose.

The interest areas of the fund include organizations, programs and services benefitting GLBT youth, the arts, health issues, operational needs and programming with a connection to the mission of the fund. Recent grants have helped train forensic nurses about same-sex domestic violence, provided support groups for LGBT senior citizens, and sponsored anti-bullying messages on the radio.
