15th Annual Sugar Plum Holiday Home Tour set for Dec. 4
AKRON, Ohio (Oct. 27, 2016) – Some of the area’s finest historic and contemporary homes will open their doors Sunday, Dec. 4, from 1 to 5 p.m. for the 15th annual Sugar Plum Tour.
The Sugar Plum Tour is Akron’s premier holiday home tour and the signature fundraiser of the Gay Community Endowment Fund of Akron Community Foundation. Since 2001, thousands of tour-goers have experienced the twinkling lights, roaring fires, sparkling trees and extraordinary holiday decorations of more than 80 homes throughout Greater Akron. Last year’s Sugar Plum Tour raised more than $100,000 for the fund, which supports programs that positively impact the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, as well as Greater Akron as a whole.
Each year, the featured homes are unique and new to the tour. This year’s tour will showcase six exquisitely decorated homes in West Akron, Fairlawn Heights and Bath. Guests at the patron ticket level will also be invited to a private party at an exclusive seventh residence in Hudson from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The first home on the tour is an elegant 1925 Tudor Revival home in the Sunset View Allotment that has been recently renovated. The rich detailing of this house was preserved while making the kitchen and bathrooms more functional for 21st century living. A few blocks away, guests will tour a house built by an executive of the Brown-Graves lumber company, where they’ll see exceptional trim work inside and out, including the fabulous wormy chestnut in the basement family room. Next, the tour will feature a modified 19th century farmhouse on Merriman Road with impressive two-story columns that was purchased by the current owner to more comfortably host their signature holiday gatherings, from Halloween to St. Patrick’s Day and beyond. A display of the home’s history will be on view.
The fourth home on the tour is a beautiful condominium in a post-war building on Portage Path that will delight visitors. Then, in Fairlawn Heights, guests will visit a 1929 Georgian-influenced home that has been decorated in a more relaxed, informal style. This home features a pool table in the living room, extensive terracing, and an outdoor kitchen with an adjacent pergola. Finally, tucked away off Yellow Creek Road, tour-goers will visit a modified Tudor-style home with beautiful Venetian marble finish on the ceiling and walls of the foyer. The rooms at the back of the house have been opened up to create an impressive great room with a kitchen, family room and wood-burning stove.
The Patron Party home is a 9,000-square-foot stunner in Hudson. This elegant, three-level traditional house was built in 2012 and reflects the owners’ meticulous attention to detail in every room. The home has been transformed into a Christmas wonderland and the owners look forward to welcoming patron guests for a very special evening.
This exciting holiday event sells out quickly each year, so tour-goers are encouraged to order their tickets early. Tickets go on sale Monday, Nov. 7, at 10 a.m. General admission tickets are $25 and include the six-home, self-guided tour. Patron tickets are $150 and include the self-guided tour of six homes, an invitation to the private, catered party at an exclusive seventh residence in Hudson, as well as a limited-edition Zeber-Martell holiday ornament. Additional limited-edition commemorative ornaments designed by local artist Claudia Zeber-Martell will be available for $20.

Market St. in Akron. General tour attendee sign-in and tour guide pickup will begin at 12:30 p.m. on the day of the tour at Angel Falls Coffee Company. Patron ticketholders and sponsors may pick up their tickets, tour guides and holiday ornaments at the West Side Bakery, 2303 W. Market St. in Akron, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
Returning to the tour this year is another fabulous seven-day online silent auction that will begin at noon on Monday, Nov. 7, and continue through noon on Monday, Nov. 14.
