2008 Sugar Plum Tour a Big Success!Historic and contemporary homes were lavishly decorated for the holidays Six of the area’s finest historic and contemporary homes opened their doors Sun., Dec. 7 for the seventh annual Sugar Plum Tour. The 2008 Sugar Plum tour took us back to Akron’s period of boom or bust, circa 1928, a period of architectural and economic importance. We visited two of these period homes on Merriman Road and two in Fairlawn Heights, with a 1983 home thrown in for good measure. Each home revived design elements from an earlier period, such as Tudor, Georgian and Arts and Crafts. Each homeowner had a handsomely different sense of decorating, unique art collections, and festive holiday décor. The Patron Party was in a sixth fabulous home in the Montrose area recently built for entertaining. Its spectacular décor is rich with elegant materials and unique pieces, and the homeowner hosts Gerri and Jim George showed the crowd of over 200 an exquisite evening with touches including valet parking, uniformed servers, delectable buffets, and over-the-top holiday decor designed with the assistance of the talented Eric Jones and Neil Leeson. Our thanks to the George's for their extraordinary generosity! Overall, the record-breaking tour welcomed over 490 guests and netted nearly $30,000 for the GCEF. All proceeds will support the philanthropic efforts of the Gay Community Endowment Fund of Akron Community Foundation.
